Bengt Asker Award

Researcher Carlo Alberto Boano, formerly at SICS, received the Bengt Asker Award for his thesis: Application Support Design for Wireless Sensor Networks (Zip 10 MB).

The award is given by The Swedish National Real-Time Association for the best Swedish master or final year thesis in the field of real-time and embedded systems.

The research work was conducted within the Center for Networked Systems. The author was jointly supervised by Pablo Suarez (Saab) and Thiemo Voigt (SICS).

SenSys Program

ACM SenSys, the flagship conference in Sensor Networks, will he held in Berkeley, California on November 4-6 2009 and the program is now available. Among the novelties: the Keynote Address links to Google Research and their PowerMeter Project. Inspiring?


The Fifth International Conference on Intelligent Sensors, Sensor Networks and Information Processing – ISSNIP 2009, held under the umbrella of the ARC Research Network on ISSNIP, is an annual forum for sensor network research.

The ISSNIP PhD/ECR Forum, taking place within the ISSNIP 2009 conference, is an opportunity for PhD students and early career researchers (ECR) to present preliminary results and works in progress to a conference audience of leading international researchers. This is a valuable opportunity to seek feedback on outstanding research questions, generate exposure for current research programs and establish new collaborative research links.

The forum will feature a poster session, a demonstration session and a panel session.

NSDR Student Travel

NSDR has five “registration waivers” (sponsored by Microsoft Research India) for students who want to attend NSDR. Practically, this makes more sense for people who are already planning to attend SOSP. Deadline for applying is Sep 29th. More information here.

EWSN 2010/CONET Master and PhD Thesis Awards

The Chairs of the 7th European Conference on Wireless Sensor Networks (EWSN 2010) and the CONET Consortium are pleased to announce the Master and PhD Thesis Award Competitions in the area of Cooperating Objects. The prize is donated by the Cooperating Objects Network of Excellence (CONET)

Cooperating Objects combine the strong functional aspects of embedded systems, pervasive computing and wireless sensor networks. Cooperating objects entities federate themselves into dynamic and loose networks in order to reach a common goal. This common goal will typically be related to sensing or control.

Theses eligible for the competition have to be completed at an official European university (EU and EFTA) between 1/DEC/2008 and 30/NOV/2009. Candidates must submit the following materials (in English) in electronic format until 4/DEC/2010:

.       Application letter, including the name of the student, the title of the thesis, its duration, and its date of completion, the date of the
defense, the overall grade and a report on the outstanding contributions of the thesis.
.       Letter of recommendation from Advisor.
.       The thesis itself.

Contiki Crash Course

Contiki Crash Course

Participants to the CONET SENIOT Summer School held in Bertinoro, Italy, this summer had the opportunity to attend an interesting hands-on session with basic exercises with the Contiki Operating System for WSN. Material from the course is available online, you could download the slides from the presentation and session notes. The material is self consistent so you could try it out too!

Contiki, developed mostly at SICS since 2003, has reached a level of stability that is interesting to explore further and it also has a growing community of users. Earlier this month, two new ports were made avaialbe: Crosbow MicaZ and Sensinode, besides other platforms already supported.

First SHIMMER Technology Exchange STE'09

logoShimmer is to organize their First Technology Exchange STE’09, to be held at Harvard University on October 5-6, 2009. Shimmer Research provides an integrated WSN mote platform specifically designed for e-Health applications.

Their platform, build around the popular MPS430 CPU + CC2420 Radio pair and TinyOS supported, is equiped with relevant sensors and interfaces including accelerometer/inclinometer, 2 axis gyro, magnetometer, extensive flash memory, TWO radios (BT and 15.4) and probably the most appealing one, an ECG ready micro-daugterboard. The event will provide a forum for the community to exchange ideas, experiences and coordinate development efforts around their products. It will be attended by shimmer users from both industry and academia.

Mobile app sees science go global

A mobile phone application will help professional and “citizen” scientists collect and analyse data from “in the field”, anywhere in the world.

The EpiCollect software collates data from certain mobiles – on topics such as disease spread or the occurrence of rare species – in a web-based database. The data is statistically analysed and plotted on maps that are instantly available to those same phones.

The approach is outlined in the open-access journal PLoS ONE.

The software has been developed for so-called smartphones that run Google’s Android open-source operating system. Researchers can report back to the EpiCollect database with results from experiments they do in the field, and “citizen scientists” can send back photos or videos of certain species from their own backyards.

Agriculture and IT

mpvisionCost-effective monitoring, collection and transmission of data through WSN to  a crop farm decision making system leads to promising applications, namely Precision Agriculture.
Agrosense is one of several worldwide efforts, a small FP7 EU funded project (~1M Eu) that looks into this application area along with remote sensing based on low-altitude unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) digital imagery in collaboration with the URSUS group. The team is integrated by researchers from various scientific institutions in Italy, Serbia and Slovenia.
Their main approach is to leverage data fed by WSN in the fields to encompass the challenges of UAV remote sensing. More about the project can be found here

ZigBee RF4CE Specs Now Available

The ZigBee RF4CE specification for advanced remote controls is now available for public download. ZigBee RF4CE replaces infrared (IR) with radio frequency (RF) communication in remote controls, allowing non-line-of-sight operation, greater range and longer battery life for consumer electronic (CE) remote controls used with HDTV, home theater equipment, set-top boxes and other audio equipment.

Announced in March 2009, ZigBee RF4CE is a standardized specification for RF remote controls that enables faster, more reliable and greater flexibility for devices to operate from longer distances. It removes the line-of-sight and field-of-vision barriers in today’s IR remotes and by supporting two-way communication, it opens the door for a whole new set of capabilities. The ZigBee RF4CE specification is designed for a wide range of products, including home entertainment devices, lighting control, security monitoring, keyless entry systems and many more.
