IPSN 2016 PhD Forum

The Ph.D. Forum at the 15th ACM/IEEE Int. Conference on Information Processing in Sensor Network (IPSN, co-located with CPSWEEK) provides an opportunity for Ph.D. students to present their work in progress to the scientific community and obtain individual feedback from leading researchers in the field.
The Forum will be structured as a series of short presentations by the students, followed by collective discussions. The student presentations will be interleaved with speeches by leading researchers, who will provide their perspectives on current and future research in the field, as well as on how to best pursue a Ph.D. in this context. A “speed mentoring” session will conclude the Forum to let the students obtain individual feedback and advice.
Participating students will also have the opportunity to present a poster during the main conference to leverage further interaction with CPSWEEK attendees.
Current Ph.D. students in the early stages of their career are encouraged to submit a 2-page abstract about their on-going research to be considered for the Ph.D. Forum. The abstract shall also include a one-paragraph bio, along with brief information on how long the student has been in Ph.D. school and the expected time until graduation. The student should be the *sole* author although contributions of the adviser and others should be acknowledged. The presentation at the Forum and the poster at the conference will be considered for a “Best Research Proposal” award. The Ph.D. Forum abstracts will also be part of the official IPSN proceedings.
Submissions will be reviewed by the Ph.D. Forum committee to ensure quality, relevance, and potential benefit from attendance to the Forum. Authors of accepted submissions are expected to participate in person in the Forum – to be held on April 11th, 2016 – and to present a poster both at the Forum and at the main conference. There will be no separate registration fee for the Forum. Participating students will only need to register to the main IPSN conference.

The ACM/IEEE International Conference on Information Processing in Sensor Networks (IPSN) is a leading annual forum on research in networked sensing and control, broadly defined. IPSN brings together researchers from academia, industry, and government to present and discuss recent advances in both theoretical and experimental research. Its scope includes signal and image processing, information and coding theory, databases and information management, distributed algorithms, networks and protocols, wireless communications, collaborative objects and the Internet of Things, machine learning, mobile and social sensing, and embedded systems design. Of special interest are contributions at the confluence of a multiple of these areas.

New: In addition to IPSN’s traditional focus areas, IPSN 2016 is inaugurating a new track on the Internet of Things (IoT). The entire program committee is eligible to review any submitted paper, but in order to aid in reviewer selection, authors are encouraged to indicate in the submission site whether their submissions are related to the IoT track.

Like previous years, IPSN 2016 will continue its focus on algorithms, theory, and systems for information processing using networks of embedded, human-in-the-loop, or social sensors, as well as new hardware and software architectures, modelling, evaluation, deployment experiences, design methods, implementations, and tools for networked embedded sensor systems.

SENSYS 14 Doctoral Colloquium

The SenSys 2014 Doctoral Colloquium seeks to provide a friendly, supportive, and constructive environment where PhD students can present their research in progress for an open discussion guided by a panel of experienced researchers and practitioners.

The DC will be structured as a series of short presentations by the students followed by individual discussions, feedback, and advise. The student presentations will be interleaved with speeches by leading researchers, who will provide their own perspectives on current and future research trends in networked sensing, as well as on how to best purse a Ph.D. in this field. Participating students will also have the opportunity to present a poster during the main conference to leverage further interaction with SENSYS attendees.

IES Symposium 2014

The “Intelligent Embedded Systems Research Group” at the Politecnico di Milano, in Milan, Italy, directed by Prof. Cesare Alippi, is organizing a symposium on “Intelligent Embedded Systems” in the context of the IEEE Symposium Series on Computational Intelligence (IEEE SSCI 2014), a flagship international symposium of symposia sponsored by the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (CIS) promoting all aspects of Computational Intelligence (CI).

In particular, the “Intelligent Embedded Systems” (IES) symposium will focus on recent achievements in computational intelligence towards embedded systems highlighting intelligent behaviours, including topics such as:

International Workshop on Robotic Sensor Networks

Recent developments in sensing and actuation technology, along with the miniaturization of computing and communication, have led to the development of commodity robot technology such as hobby drones and robot toolkits. These platforms are bringing sensing and actuation at places where traditional technology does not reach; for example, for aerial pollution monitoring or for disaster management in remote areas.

This novel class of cyber-physical systems (CPS) take many of the design, implementation, and validation issues of traditional CPSs to an extreme. Control, sensing, estimation, and algorithms for localization, mapping, navigation, and exploration of individual robots are needed to govern their movements. The timing aspects of vehicle operation are key to provide run-time guarantees about performance. The software design and implementation must lead to provably correct execution. Noisy or inaccurate information sensed by the robots must be properly handled to ensure an accurate understanding of the environment.

Research efforts to address the issues above, while related, have previously progressed independently with little cross-fertilization across diverse disciplines such as robotics, real-time systems, signal processing, and software development. The goal of this workshop is to create a platform where researchers from different communities can get together to better understand the latest developments in these related fields as well as to establish connections for future interdisciplinary work. The workshop intends to provide a platform to enable such cross-fertilization, to ultimately speed up the development of the field and to foster rich interdisciplinary work in the future. Particularly, co-location with the Cyber-Physical Systems week will be an asset in this regard. CPSWEEK is the premiere CPS event that brings together five top conferences from complementary areas such as Embedded Systems, Real-time Systems, Sensor Networks, Hybrid Systems, and Networked Systems.

To build the needed interdisciplinary work ultimately necessary to the development of the field, the workshop seeks technical contributions describing original, previously unpublished results in all topics related to the design of robotic sensor networks, including works across two or more of the following topic areas:

  • Programming of robot swarms
  • Low-power communication in robot networks
  • Sensing coverage using robotic swarms
  • Task allocation
  • Distributed sensing
  • Coordination in robotic swarms
  • Verification and validation
  • Distributed planning and navigation

Call for Papers: The Fifth Workshop on Real-World Wireless Sensor Networks

19-20 September 2013, Como Lake, Italy

We are excited to announce that the fifth Workshop on Real-World Wireless Sensor will be held at the Como Lake, Italy in September 2013.

The purpose of the fifth Workshop on Real-World Wireless Sensor Networks (REALWSN) is to bring together researchers and practitioners working in the area of sensor networks, with focus on real-world experiments or deployments of wireless sensor networks. Included are also new forms of sensing such as those that leverage smart phones, Internet of Things, RFIDs, and robots.

When working with real-world experiments or deployments, many new issues arise: the network environment may be composed of a variety of different technologies, leading to very heterogeneous network structures; software development for large scale networks poses new types of problems; prototype networks may differ significantly from the deployed system; actual sensor network deployments may need a complex combination of autonomous and manual configuration. Furthermore, results obtained through simulation are typically not directly applicable to operational networks and it is therefore imperative for the community to produce results from experimental research.

Authors are invited to submit papers (12 pages, Springer format, 9 or 10 point font size) for presentation at the workshop. Papers will be selected based on originality, technical merit, and relevance.

All topics pertaining to real-world wireless sensor networks are of interest, including but not limited to:

SESENA 2013: 4th International Workshop on Software Engineering for Sensor Network Applications

In conjunction with ACM/IEEE International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE) May 18-26, 2013, San Francisco (USA)

By acting as the interface between digital and physical worlds, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) represent a fundamental building block of the upcoming Internet of Things and a key enabler for Cyber-Physical and Pervasive Computing Systems. Despite the interest raised by this decade-old research topic, the development of WSN software is still carried out in a rather primitive fashion, by building software directly atop the operating system and by relying on an individual’s hard-earned programming skills. WSN developers must face not only the functional application requirements but also a number of challenging, non-functional requirements and constraints resulting from scarce resources. The heterogeneity of network nodes, the unpredictable environmental influences, and the large size of the network further add to the difficulties. In the WSN community, there is a growing awareness of the need for methodologies, techniques, and abstractions that simplify development tasks and increase the confidence in the correctness and performance of the resulting software. Software engineering (SE) support is therefore sought, not only to ease the development task but also to make it more reliable, dependable, and repeatable. Nevertheless, this topic has received so far very little attention by the SE community.

SESENA13 aims to attract researchers belonging to both the SE and WSN communities, not only to exchange recent research results on the topic, but also to stimulate discussion about the core open problems and to define a shared research agenda. The workshop welcomes both research contributions and position statements. The former will foster in-depth technical discussions of novel results with an audience composed of both SE and WSN researchers. The latter will provide the opportunity for presenting open problems, provocative views, or previously unexplored ideas in an informal fashion. To foster discussion, SESENA13 will also host a special “speakers’ corner” session composed of impromptu presentations where attendees (including those without accepted papers) will have the opportunity to present their own views in very short segments (e.g., 2-4 minutes).
