CPS Week 2015

Cyber-physical systems (CPS) are complex engineering systems that rely on the integration of physical, computation, and communication processes to function. Theories, algorithms, systems and methodologies developed for CPS are the foundations for applications like Internet of Things, industrial internet and automation, smart transportations, smart grids, smart cities, buildings and homes, data centers, health care, wellbeing and so on. Such systems must be operated safely, dependably, securely, efficiently and in real-time. Advances in this field will have great technical, economic and societal impacts in the near future. Since 2008, CPS Week is the premier forum for academic, industry, and governmental researchers to present latest research results and exchange ideas on all aspects of CPS.

CPS Week 2015 will be held in the beautiful city of Seattle, Washington, USA.

The event features four major collocated conferences:

New Book: Intelligence for Embedded Systems, a Methodological Approach

The book, written by Prof. Cesare Alippi and published by Spinger is a comprehensive, interdisciplinary treatment of intelligent systems, teaching the reader everything from metrology to cognition. It shows students and engineers how to understand basic mechanisms and design advanced applications, feeding a digital world eager for intelligent mechanisms. It also introduces researchers to ideas characterizing the transition from one generation of intelligent devices to the next.

IES Symposium 2014

The “Intelligent Embedded Systems Research Group” at the Politecnico di Milano, in Milan, Italy, directed by Prof. Cesare Alippi, is organizing a symposium on “Intelligent Embedded Systems” in the context of the IEEE Symposium Series on Computational Intelligence (IEEE SSCI 2014), a flagship international symposium of symposia sponsored by the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (CIS) promoting all aspects of Computational Intelligence (CI).

In particular, the “Intelligent Embedded Systems” (IES) symposium will focus on recent achievements in computational intelligence towards embedded systems highlighting intelligent behaviours, including topics such as:

•Computational intelligence for cyber-physical systems
•Intelligent fault diagnosis systems
•Intelligent solutions for Internet of Things
•Intelligent sensor networks

International Workshop on Robotic Sensor Networks

Recent developments in sensing and actuation technology, along with the miniaturization of computing and communication, have led to the development of commodity robot technology such as hobby drones and robot toolkits. These platforms are bringing sensing and actuation at places where traditional technology does not reach; for example, for aerial pollution monitoring or for disaster management in remote areas.

This novel class of cyber-physical systems (CPS) take many of the design, implementation, and validation issues of traditional CPSs to an extreme. Control, sensing, estimation, and algorithms for localization, mapping, navigation, and exploration of individual robots are needed to govern their movements. The timing aspects of vehicle operation are key to provide run-time guarantees about performance. The software design and implementation must lead to provably correct execution. Noisy or inaccurate information sensed by the robots must be properly handled to ensure an accurate understanding of the environment.

Research efforts to address the issues above, while related, have previously progressed independently with little cross-fertilization across diverse disciplines such as robotics, real-time systems, signal processing, and software development. The goal of this workshop is to create a platform where researchers from different communities can get together to better understand the latest developments in these related fields as well as to establish connections for future interdisciplinary work. The workshop intends to provide a platform to enable such cross-fertilization, to ultimately speed up the development of the field and to foster rich interdisciplinary work in the future. Particularly, co-location with the Cyber-Physical Systems week will be an asset in this regard. CPSWEEK is the premiere CPS event that brings together five top conferences from complementary areas such as Embedded Systems, Real-time Systems, Sensor Networks, Hybrid Systems, and Networked Systems.

To build the needed interdisciplinary work ultimately necessary to the development of the field, the workshop seeks technical contributions describing original, previously unpublished results in all topics related to the design of robotic sensor networks, including works across two or more of the following topic areas:

  • Programming of robot swarms
  • Low-power communication in robot networks
  • Sensing coverage using robotic swarms
  • Task allocation
  • Distributed sensing
  • Coordination in robotic swarms
  • Verification and validation
  • Distributed planning and navigation
  • Novel applications
  • Experience reports

Research Positions at CISTER

Two research positions in the fields of Cooperating Objects, Cyber-Physical Systems & Sensor Networks are available at the Research Centre on Real-Time Computing Systems (CISTER). The Centre is currently looking to strengthen its research team in the CONET NoE research clusters and SENODs project on all levels: Senior Scientists, Invited Scientists and Post-Docs.

The candidates should have a PhD in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering or related fields. Particular expertise in Cyber-Physical Systems is a plus. She/he should also have an international publication record and ability to do independent research. Fluency in written and spoken English is required.

CPS Week Workshops & Tutorials

The CPS Week 2012 (Cyber-Physical Systems Week) in Beijing will include a workshop and tutorial day on April 16, 2012. Each workshop will provide an arena for presentations and discussions about a special topic of relevance to CPS Week. Each tutorial will present in-depth content in a mini-course format aimed primarily at students, researchers, or attendees from industry.

Proposals: If you are interested in organising a workshop or a tutorial at CPS Week 2012, please send a proposal (maximum 2-page PDF file) containing information about the following:

* Workshop or tutorial title,
* Abstract (maximum 200 words),
* The topic of the workshop/tutorial and how it relates to CPS Week,
* The organisers behind the workshop/tutorial including contact information, and short bio and affiliation,
* Proposed Program Committee,
* Planned review procedures,
* In the case of a workshop what the intended format will be (invited presentations, submitted presentations, panels, etc),
* Expected sponsorships (if any),
* Profile of a typical attendee (academic researcher, student or industry participant),
* A rough estimate of the number of participants,
* In case the workshop/tutorial has been previously held, provide information on the conference, date, and number of attendees.

Networked Embedded Systems: Humans in the Loop

The Cooperating Objects Network of Excellence (CONET) is organising another Summer School this year. Like the 2009 edition, the school goes back to Bertinoro International Center for Informatics (BiCi), (Forlì-Cesena), Italy and will be held on 24 – 30 July, 2011.

Sensor networks, cyber-physical systems, and cooperating objects are becoming an important part of our daily life. Humans build, deploy, use, and maintain these systems that can sense our activities and influence our behaviour. We will increasingly rely on these networked embedded systems, therefore also requiring a secure and privacy-preserving treatment of sensitive human-centric data. Novel paradigms and solutions are also needed to allow humans to interact with these systems.

The goal of the summer school is to survey fundamental and applied aspects of networked embedded systems and their relationship to humans, as well as to identify novel opportunities and research directions in these areas through a series of lectures by international experts. Participants will also experience the relevant technologies during hands-on courses and be given a chance to present their own work during a participants’ workshop. The school will provide a great opportunity to know other people working in the field, to meet distinguished scholars, and to establish contacts that may lead to research collaborations in the future. We expect about 60 participants. The intended audience are postgraduate students, PhD students, and young researchers from universities and industrial laboratories around the world.
